The municipal swimming pool, dedicated in October 2007 and opened in June of 2008, is known as the James A. Nelles Memorial Swimming Pool in honor of the longtime city employee and supervisor. Nelles, who died in 2006, was employed by the City for 64 years, 40 of which were as an employee and 24 as an elected city controller.
The expansive pool complex, all of which is fully handicap accessible, includes a wading pool, lap pool, large swimming pool, diving boards, water slides, fountains, and a number of water features. The attraction also includes dressing rooms and baby-changing facilities, picnic areas, a covered pavilion, sand volleyball court, tetherball court, and more. Snacks and beverages may also be purchased at the concession stand, both by pool patrons as well as by non-pool attendees who can order by way of an outside opening along the access road beside the pool.
The Oil City Water Department works diligently each year to provide all maintenance and operational support for the James A. Nelles Memorial Swimming Pool.
